REFLECTION

BENEFIT OF ICT IN SCIENCE EDUCATION

Technology is a powerful tool that has great potential in enhancing the learning of science. Through the use of technology especially video, computer and internet, the teaching and learning of science can be made more interesting and effective. Through this course, I had learned about computer simulation and animation, data logger and also smart board.

Computer simulation and animation can be presented through courseware or web page. Teacher can download the video or simulations from internet freely. What they need is to install any software that can play the simulation. And the software also are available for free, where teacher can download from internet.

Application tools such as word processors, graphic presentation software and electronic spreadsheet are valuable tools for the analysis and presentation of data. Besides that, during last week ICT class, we had introduced and explained about Smart Board by Apple Company. This tool is very useful for teacher in teaching. It is flexible, easy to use and handle, can attract student thus it can make two way of communication during the lesson. Smart board can be assumed as combination of traditional chalk and talk, power point presentation and IT technologies.

The use of other tools such as data logger and computer interfacing in experiments also enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning of science. Data logger is a devise that records data. It has many type of sensors such as temperature, sound, light and humidity. One of the primary benefit of using data logger is the ability to automatically collect data on 24 hours time. It allows for comprehensive and accurate picture of the environmental conditions being monitored such as temperature and humidity.

Benefits of Simulation-based Education

Simulations are thought to be effective in education especially in science subjects such as Chemistry, Biology and Physics because they elicit higher levels of arousal, motivation, task engagement, and quality of problem-solving in students than that offered by traditional classroom methods. It needs to emphasize more on practical knowledge and efficient tools that will enhance the students’ thinking, problem solving and interpersonal skills so that they can face the challenges ahead and emerge as competent leaders in the industry after they leave the universities. Simulation has emerged as an important approach to meet this need.
Numerous potential benefits of simulations such as:
· Ensured reproducible curriculum for all students
· Instant performance feedback
· Improved psychomotor skills
· Develop an enjoyable learning experience
· Give students a chance to test their intuition
· Enhance learning (with the assumption that learning is done better by doing than by just listening, reading, or writing)
· Build students’ confidence and teamwork
· They can then use these opportunities to modify their decisions and actions and to observe the impact of such changes.

Improving and creating simulation software will give variety of teaching and learning methods. Teacher can make their lesson more interesting and this will attract students to be more focused in their classroom. Students are able to try and correct themselves at the same time and learn fast through simulation. I hope more educators and expertise will be able to create simulation which suitable for students in every field or subjects as it can give big impact to the learning process.

ICT Class..... What do you think?
First of all, thumbs-up for this course. This is because it has made me realized the important of technology especially in teaching. Before this, I'm not really care about ICT so I did not know not only data logger but smart board as well. They are really rare to me. This is because I took pure chemistry during my degree. So, the only thing I knew, go to the lab and did my experiments. But now, the situation is quite different when I'm taking this wonderful course. It successfully help me to develop along with technology as well as give the ideas to create an innovation towards my teaching style. Now, those weird things are not longer rare for me anymore... Thanks for this course and Dr Saadiah as well for the precious knowledge I got through this class.

  1. I am agree with you that a lot of benefits of ICT in education. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) which include radio and television, as well asnewer digital technologies such as computers and the Internet—have been touted as potentially powerful enabling tools for educational change and reform. When used appropriately, different ICTs are said to help expand access to education, strengthen the relevance of education to the increasingly digital workplace, and raise educational quality by, among others, helping make teaching and learning into an engaging, active process connected to real life.

  2. Since we, as new teachers had realized the benefit of ICT towards P&P,so, we must share these benefits with all senior teachers at our schools. Because, maybe they still remain use the traditional way 100% and ignore the technologies in their lesson. We can tell and show them how to use the basic technology, hence, they will start to improve their skills to teach with new teaching facilities that available in school.

  4. TQ kak Aini for your ideas. It seems that simulation is a must tool for education that can't be left behind but every teacher need to use it for their P&P process. After I have read your ideas, I felt very excited to give my view on simulation as a reflection for your brilliant ideas. In simulation, an activity that resembles the actual situations is carried out. There are many types of simulations such as role-play, games and the use of models. In role-play, students play out a particular role based on certain pre-determined conditions. How about games? Games require procedures that need to be followed. Students play games in order to learn a particular principle. Meanwhile, models are used to represent objects or actual situations that student can visualized the real objects or situations. Hence, they can understand the concepts and principal of learning. Besides that, they will feel attracted and enjoy themselves in participating during the teaching and learning process. Students can contribute and share their opinion in class, so that no more one way learning. Visualisation through simulation are become as the best way of learning process nowadays. :)

  5. I'm also agree with both of you. Okay, when we talk about its benefits, I'm also want to share its advantanges from my point of views. First of foremost, these tools such as simulation, smart board and data logger help teachers to create a conducive environment for their students so that it cause the teaching and learning process become more exciting and enjoyable as well as foster students participating in learning process where passive students are not longer become passive again but instead of that, they actively engaged during the learning. In fact, their confident level also increased because as we known they are usually a shy person so that their abilities, intelligence and skills cannot be transferred well during the process of learning.

However, by using smart board for example, it help teachers to conduct the teaching process easily where teachers can write, move and wipe out the words as well as show the learning videos by using only their fingertips. Do you think how amazing it is? So, their students become curious on that tool thereby cause them to take part the learning process where student-centered approach successfully developed. Nevertheless, I cannot deny that huge money is required to buy that tool but it is worth to has it for the sake of long term students achievements.

Besides, ICT also help students to gain better understanding and knowledge about their study especially on difficult topics for instance by using simulation where it will help students especially chemistry learners by illustrating chemical phenomena because it is hard to see by our eyes as well as arouse their interest in chemistry and boost them to study chemistry further.

In fact, it also supports their creativity and develop their own skills so that it has shown constructivist learning successfully evoked. This is essential for them to face any uncertainty situation especially in new environment thereby they can make any adaptation towards the changes with flying color.

All of all, teachers get a lot of benefits when apply ICT in their teaching methods as well for their students.

  6. Salam friends:)
Talk about simulation, simulations technique are not limited to only computer software simulations. With inadequate ICT facilities at school, I believe some of creative teachers use student itself to be a model in a simulation activities. Like a games - as najah said. Here I would like to share my experience using students as a model.
In topic isomerism of hydrocarbon, students always get confused to differentiate among the type of constitutional isomer. There is a three type of it - chain, positional and functional group. So, I asked student to be an atom - H,C,O and some other atoms. They marked themselves by wearing a cap, different colour of scarf and different gender to differentiate the atom they would be. Then, they form a molecule given where they hold the hand with each other to form a bonds between the atom. They rearrange their position to make different type of isomerism. From this activities, students enhanced their understanding by experiencing with be the atom in the molecule.

  7. Games is the most available simulation that teacher can apply during their class. To kak safizan, you are really creative in your teaching process! I hope that I can ask your opinion oneday to make my lesson more interesting and students can contribute in class to make learning process become more fun and meaningful!
    TQ!
